LinkedIn: Your Digital Front Door

LinkedIn: Your Digital Front Door

LinkedIn is the name of the game is job search. It’s not about who YOU know. Rather, job search is about WHO knows you. And LinkedIn is where prospective employers go to source candidates, learn more about a candidate, see who the employer and the candidate know in common, and learn what others have said about you.

Hardly a day goes by that we don’t get a call from a candidate asking for help with LinkedIn. Good LinkedIn is an art—much like writing a good resume. It’s your digital front door—the first thing people see about you. And it’s definitely not about pasting in your old resume verbatim.

The rules of the road for LinkedIn:

  1. Do not regurgitate your resume on LinkedIn.
  2. Make sure the headline is more than just your job title.
  3. Make sure you have a compelling “About” section on profile.
  4. Do not paste in a PDF of your resume; it looks bad and that’s not the purpose of LinkedIn.
  5. Make sure you complete the backend that tells recruiters what you are seeking. A carefully worded note to recruiters is not a bad idea.
  6. If you are gainfully employed and not wishing to draw attention to yourself, do not broadcast your changes to your network.
